What Size Table for Mahjong? Square, Round & Rectangular Guide
Share
Quick answer: For a four-player game of American mahjong, a square table of about 34 to 36 inches per side is the easiest choice. A standard card table of about 34 inches fits a 33" x 33" mahjong mat and four racks, and everyone can reach the wall. Round tables work too, but a 33" mat only lies fully flat on a round table at least about 47 inches wide. Rectangular tables work if you set up across the width.
You don't need a special game table to play. You need a sturdy surface that is big enough for four racks and the wall, but small enough that every player can reach the center. This guide covers square, round and rectangular tables, plus the mats and racks that fit each one.
What Size Table Do You Need for Mahjong?
An American mahjong table has to hold three things at once:
- Four racks, one along each side, holding each player's tiles.
- The wall, built in a square in front of the racks and pushed toward the center.
- The discards, placed face up in the middle where everyone can read them.
That is why a square table about the size of a card table is so popular. It is big enough for all of the above and small enough that no one has to stretch to pick a tile or call a discard. A much bigger table is not better: if the center is too far away, players end up leaning across the table all night.
| Table | How it works for mahjong |
|---|---|
| Square card table, about 34" | The classic choice. Fits a 33" x 33" mat with a little table showing at the edges. |
| Square table, about 36" | A bit more room for drinks and scoring cards at each corner, with an easy reach to the center. |
| Round table, about 47" or wider | A 33" mat lies fully flat. Each player sits along a curve, so racks sit slightly in from the edge. |
| Round table, smaller than 47" | Playable, but the mat corners hang over the edge. |
| Rectangular dining table | Works if the table is not much wider than a card table. Set up across the width (see below). |
Square Tables and Card Tables
A square table gives each player a straight edge for their rack and the same distance to the wall, which is why most American mahjong groups play on one. A standard square card table is about 34 inches across, and our mats are made for it. Every mat in our mahjong mats collection is listed at 33" x 33", so it covers nearly the whole card table without hanging over the edge.
If you play on a small table, a mat with a calm, open center helps keep the play area easy to read. The Zen Bamboo Mahjong Mat frames a mint center with hand-drawn bamboo, and like all of our mats it is neoprene with a stitched border, non-slip backing and an instructional layout printed on the mat. For more on sizes and materials, see our mahjong mat buying guide.
Round Tables
You can absolutely play mahjong at a round kitchen or dining table. The thing to check is the mat. A 33" square mat is about 46.7 inches from corner to corner, so:
- On a round table of about 47 inches or more, the whole mat lies flat on the tabletop.
- On a smaller round table, the four corners hang over the edge. You can still play, since the corners sit between the players, but the mat won't lie perfectly flat.
On a round table, line up each rack along one side of the mat, not along the curved edge of the table. That keeps the wall square and the same distance from every player.
Can You Play Mahjong on a Rectangular Table?
Yes. Most dining tables are rectangles, and they work fine with a little planning:
- Center the mat across the width. If your table is close to the width of a card table, the two players on the long sides can sit normally.
- Bring the end players in. The players at the two ends set their racks at the edge of the mat rather than at the edge of the table, so their wall is the same distance from the center as everyone else's.
- Use one end of a long table. On a long table, set up at one end instead of the middle. Then only one player has extra table in front of them, and the rest of the table is free for food and drinks.
If your dining table is very wide, a folding card table is often the simpler answer. It also lets you set up two tables side by side when you host eight players.
Choosing Racks for Your Table Size
Racks sit along the edges of the mat, so their length matters most on a small table. Racks in our racks and pushers collection are listed from 16" to 20" long, and any of them fits along one side of a 33" mat.
- For compact tables: the Color Pop 16" Wooden Mahjong Racks & Pushers are a set of 4 solid wood racks in bright colors. Their listing describes the 16" length as keeping setups compact for brunch tables and travel.
- For a middle ground: the Studio Acrylic Mahjong Racks & Pushers come in 17.5" or 20" lengths with integrated pushers, so you can choose the size that suits your table.
- For a full-size table: the Soft Lacquer 20" Wooden Mahjong Racks & Pushers are a set of 4 hardwood racks with integrated scalloped pushers, listed as a 20" length for a full American mahjong hand.

Tips for Setting Up Your Mahjong Table
- Keep drinks off the play area. A small side table or tray next to each seat keeps glasses away from the tiles. Our mahjong etiquette guide has more table manners worth sharing with new players.
- Use good light. A bright overhead light makes tile faces and the card easier to read, especially for evening games.
- Leave room for chairs. Players reach toward the center all game, so make sure everyone can pull in close.
- Playing with fewer people? With two or three players the same table works. See how to play American mahjong with 2 or 3 players.

Mahjong Table Size FAQ
What size table do you need for mahjong?
For four players, a square table of about 34 to 36 inches per side is the easiest fit. A standard card table of about 34 inches holds a 33" x 33" mahjong mat and four racks, with everyone close enough to reach the wall.
Is a card table big enough for mahjong?
Yes. A standard square card table of about 34 inches is the classic mahjong table. It fits a 33" x 33" mat, and racks from 16" to 20" long sit comfortably along each side.
What size round table works for mahjong?
A 33" square mat measures about 46.7 inches from corner to corner, so it lies fully flat on a round table at least that wide. On a smaller round table you can still play, but the mat corners will hang over the edge.
Can you play mahjong on a rectangular table?
Yes. Center the mat across the width of the table. The two players on the long sides sit normally, and the players at the ends move their racks to the edge of the mat. On a long dining table, set up at one end so only one player has to reach farther.
Do you need a special mahjong table?
No. American mahjong is played on ordinary card, dining and kitchen tables. A mat gives you a cushioned, non-slip play area, so any sturdy table of the right size works.
What rack length fits a small table?
Shorter racks keep a small table less crowded. Our Color Pop wooden racks are listed at 16", while 20" racks such as Soft Lacquer give more room for tiles if your table is a little bigger.
